All of us have some kind of idea of how they plan on getting out in the world, make money, and get set up to retire on the beach somewhere in creature comfort. Okay, well it may not always be a beach, it might be a rocky mountain cabin, a Tuscan Villa, or a New York Penthouse, but we all have the thought of wanting to end up comfortable and financially solvent so that we never have to worry about money, right? The big aspect of this idea is that how many of us actually have a winning formula or plan to make sure this happens? Too many of us are burning the candle at both ends, spend too much money on cars, clothes, and coffee, and can't seem to get the money put away no matter how much we make.
Establishing the plan to make money is only the first half of the formula, as we have to know what to do with the money once we have it. Certainly having that night out on the town is great, and an occasional weekend blowing off steam in Las Vegas is cool too, but we also need to curb the spending trends in our life a little in order to put some of this cash to good use through savings and investing. How often have any of us truly denied our urges to order lobster dinners to remind ourselves of retirement? Or refused to buy the new car we wanted and kept driving the old bucket around because we wanted to be able to have more for our prescription medication forty years later? It is really a hard thing to do.
If you have the ability to make money in excess now, just put something away for tomorrow. Help yourself out before you are nearing fifty years old and have nothing to show for your years of hard work except a lot of credit card debt and a lot of fun memories of Vegas trips and lobster dinners. A little discipline can go a long way, and if you will be able to fight at least a few of your spending urges you will begin to win the fight for your future. Don't let your bad behaving buddies talk you into another Las Vegas trip when you know you need to save a little more this month. It will save you from retirement years living in squalor if you can put them off once in a while.
